Planning Home Office and Bedroom Built-Ins: Two Mississauga Projects
Compare two real Mississauga built-ins: CAD $7,500 and $5,300, transport and installation included, HST excluded, with two days on site for each.
Two projects, two storage needs
A wall of cabinetry can look impressive and still leave the everyday problem unsolved. In a home office, papers need a convenient place while display objects need visibility. In a bedroom, books, larger possessions and items best kept out of sight may all compete for the same wall.
These two completed Yellow Pencil projects in Mississauga show different ways to organise that space. The 2026 black library and home-office cabinetry had a recorded cost of CAD $7,500. The 2023 bedroom bookcase had a recorded cost of CAD $5,300. Yellow Pencil confirms that both historical amounts included transportation and installation, excluded HST, and involved two days of on-site installation each.
The figures describe those particular projects. They are a useful starting point for understanding scope, rather than a current price list.
Project 1: a home-office wall for display and file storage

Mississauga, 2026. Historical cabinetry cost: CAD $7,500, excluding HST; transportation and installation included. On-site installation: two days.
The office needed both a composed display wall and practical storage for files. The completed cabinetry uses black spray-painted MDF, glass-fronted towers, pale oak-colour interiors, brass-toned hardware and integrated lighting. Lower cabinets and file drawers give the working side of the room a different storage zone from the glazed displays.
The important choice here is what stays visible. Transparent doors suit objects intended for display; closed lower storage gives paperwork a place without turning it into part of the room's backdrop. Pale, illuminated interiors also give depth to the dark cabinetry, rather than making the whole wall read as one flat black surface.
The photo shows the finished room, including freestanding furniture and artwork. The documented amount is for the cabinetry scope; it does not establish the price of every object visible in the photo. The exact substrate behind the pale interior finish was not recorded, so the project is described by its documented finish rather than an assumed wood species.
For a similar office, start by separating files, equipment, books and display objects. Then decide which items need frequent access and which should remain behind doors. That decision is more useful to a cabinet plan than selecting a colour first.
Project 2: a bedroom wall for books, display and concealed storage

Mississauga, 2023. Historical project cost: CAD $5,300, excluding HST; transportation and installation included. On-site installation: two days.
This project turned a bedroom wall into a combination of book storage, display compartments, wide drawers and low open bays. The oak-colour laminate gives the large installation a lighter appearance beside the bed and window. It is an oak-colour finish, not a claim that the cabinet was built from solid oak.
The open compartments vary in shape and size. That allows books, binders and larger objects to occupy different parts of the wall instead of being forced into a uniform grid. Selected shelves have integrated linear lighting; broad drawers place less display-friendly storage below the open sections.
The planning task differs from the office. Here, the wall must accommodate a collection while remaining part of a sleeping space. Decide which books deserve easy access, which possessions should stay in drawers, and whether lighted display compartments suit how the bedroom is used.
The original material notes mention possible laminate references, but do not identify a final installed brand. Exact site dimensions and the overall project duration were not supplied.
Compare the storage job before comparing the price
The price difference does not isolate the cost of paint, laminate, glass or lighting. The projects have different configurations and were completed in different years. Their dimensions and individual cost breakdowns are not documented here, so neither a price per foot nor a reliable material surcharge can be calculated from these examples.
For your own project, put the proposed scope beside the quotation: cabinet configuration, doors and drawers, finish, hardware, lighting, transport, installation and tax treatment. A lower figure is only useful if you understand what it covers.
- What needs a place? — Home-office cabinetry: Files, office storage and selected display objects; Bedroom bookcase: Books, binders, larger objects and concealed storage.
- What stays visible? — Home-office cabinetry: Glass-fronted display zones, with working storage below; Bedroom bookcase: Varied open shelving, with drawers beneath.
- What do the finishes do? — Home-office cabinetry: Black painted fronts contrast with pale, illuminated interiors; Bedroom bookcase: Oak-colour laminate helps the large wall sit quietly in the bedroom.
- Recorded year and amount — Home-office cabinetry: 2026 · CAD $7,500, excluding HST; Bedroom bookcase: 2023 · CAD $5,300, excluding HST.
- Transportation and installation — Home-office cabinetry: Included in the historical amount; Bedroom bookcase: Included in the historical amount.
- On-site installation — Home-office cabinetry: Two days; Bedroom bookcase: Two days.
What “two days on site” means
Yellow Pencil confirms two days of on-site installation for each of these completed projects. That describes the installation stage. It is not a claim that either project moved from an initial enquiry to finished cabinetry in two days.
Room review, measurements, layout decisions, approvals, fabrication and scheduling are separate parts of a custom-cabinet project. Their durations were not supplied for these cases. Precise installation dates were also not recorded; the verified project years are retained without inventing a day or month.
When discussing a new project, ask for the expected installation window separately from the total delivery schedule. Confirm how site access, equipment information and any lighting or electrical coordination will be handled. These historical examples do not establish a guaranteed installation duration for another room.
Prepare a brief that explains how you use the room
Before requesting a quote, gather:
This brief lets you compare a layout and a price against the same practical requirements. It also helps keep an attractive inspiration photo from becoming an incomplete specification.
- Room context: wall photographs, approximate dimensions, doors, windows and access.
- Storage inventory: books, files, equipment and display objects, including anything unusually large.
- Access priorities: what you use daily, what can stay higher up and what belongs behind a door.
- Lighting preferences: which areas need display light, how it will be controlled and what access must remain for maintenance.
- A defined quotation scope: materials, finish, hardware, transport, installation, HST treatment, inclusions and exclusions.
- Two scheduling questions: the overall delivery plan and the expected time needed on site.
Discuss your built-in project
Send Yellow Pencil your room photographs, rough dimensions and the items you need to store. Include your project location and preferred timing so the cabinet scope can be reviewed for your property.
Project years, historical costs and case details are drawn from Yellow Pencil's published project records. Transportation, installation, HST treatment and the two-day on-site installation figures were confirmed by the business owner for these two cases.
